Bremerton Gateway, Bremerton
JGM
was an important member of the team that created a new civic gateway
to Bremerton as part of a larger transportation project. Two blocks of dilapidated
buildings were removed to permit a smooth realignment of the roadway. This
included an exclusive turn-lane into the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Kitsap
County ’s largest employer. As a result, the open space and redesigned
intersection provided a unique park-like space, creating the city’s new
gateway.
Nestling the streets into the landscape, contoured earth forms
buffer the adjacent residences from roadway impacts. Plantings
define and compliment the gateway and roads while providing a screen
from traffic. Graceful curving walls, with integrated signage,
complete the civic welcome to all who pass.
Ted Wall , ASLA, was the project manager. The scope of services
included master planning, public involvement, design and construction
documents for both phases.
