STEWART HEIGHTS PARK MASTER DEVELOPMENT PLAN - TACOMA, WA
In Summer 2007, JGM was selected by Metro Parks Tacoma to prepare an updated master development plan and subsequent contract documents for one of their newly anointed “signature parks”. With this change in designation came the realization that additional park improvements to existing facilities and expansion were needed. The existing 37-acre park was home to an older play field, skatepark, recently constructed aquatic facility and an old, outdated play area.
JGM worked closely with Metro Parks staff, an advisory committee and the community to develop a program and improvements appropriate to update this important park resource. The site analysis, community workshops and staff reviews led to completion of a Draft Development Plan. The plan included a renovated athletic field, a new restroom building, a new play area, one relocated picnic shelter, and a new skate park facility.
The ‘signature park’ designation demanded a ‘signature play’ facility. A separate play area advisory group was formed to focus on the most appropriate type of play area for park users. The water play element of the existing aquatic facility led to the ship wreak theme chosen for the play area. Separate elements of the structures divide the ability levels for various age groups. The facility was centrally located within the park to allow for greater visibility and accessibility.
JGM proceeded to produce construction documents for the park improvements. The construction was completed in Spring, 2009.
