Sammamish River Trail, King County
Connecting the communities of the Sammamish Valley , including
Redmond , Woodinville, Bothell and Kenmore, the 16-mile Sammamish
River Trail formed a major link in King County ’s trail system
and was the impetus for the formation of a greenway beside the
river.
The project included design of a multi-purpose trail with a soft
surface shoulder for equestrian use alongside a paved way for bicyclists
and pedestrians. The plan also created fishing access, parking,
entrance identification, planting buffers and enhanced wildlife
habitat. The trail helped to re-oriented nearby communities back
towards the river.
With the goal of encouraging wildlife proliferation and improving
flood control, JGM participated on subsequent hydraulic studies
outlining measures to restore the ‘engineered’ channel
to a more naturalistic waterway.
JGM’s scope included pre-design studies, schematic master
planning and construction documents. David McNeal, FASLA, was the
project landscape architect.
